When you are in Quito you will get the chance to visit many local produce and meat markets. This is one of the best. If you are lucky enough to be staying in a hostel with Kitchen facilities you can really save some money and enjoy some home cooked meals. Eating in restaurants is great by its nice to cook exactly what you want for a change. On the bottom floor you have about 50 small booths selling a variety of meals. Many tourists are put off by the strange smells and the fear of getting a bad meal. Don't be! The food is good, typical Ecuadorian fare and the cost will surprise you. You will be surrounded by Ecuadorians because few tourists choose to eat here. Their loss. Try the shrimp soup. On the bottom floor you will find the fish and farmed shrimp merchants. Try the Corvina. You will also find all the poultry merchants on the bottom floor. Lots of fresh free range chickens for about $7.00 each and tasty free range green and pale yellow eggs are available for .25 cents apiece. Regular eggs are .11-.12 cents You will also find the potatoe, sausage, and spice merchants on this level. Upstairs you will find the fresh, organic fruit and produce sellers. Avocados, papayas, mangos, and a variety of other fruits are on offer for about .50 cents each. You can also buy fresh meat. There are about 10 merchants selling a variety of pork, beef, and a little bit of expensive lamb. There are also food booths on this level. Eat like a local.
