5. Renewable Fuels

Clarient developed a process to break down cellulosic biomass into energy like animals do in our digestive system. A combination of  custom enzymes and bacteria, it ferments feedstock which they claim produces 50% more Ethanol-Their process is called Sunliquid. It has implications for our pre-treatment of bio mass in the future feedstocks.

University of Washington completed a study in May saying that dead wood contaminated by beatles is an excellent feedstock for pyrolysis. No word yet as to whether the music from the 60's impacts the quality of the oil.

HiIgh 4-ethyl phenol (4-EP) using activated carbon (AC)

China Study shows that  highest quality  4-ethyl phenol (4-EP)  was produced at 300 Degrees C Fast pyrolysis of bagasse catalyzed by activated carbon (AC) at low temperatures offered a new and promising way to produce the valuable 4-ethyl phenol (4-EP) compound in high selectivity. In this study, the technique of pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) was first applied to investigate several factors on the 4-EP production, including biomass type, fast pyrolysis temperature, AC-to-bagasse ratio, and catalytic pattern (in situ or ex situ catalysis). Moreover, fast pyrolysis experiments by using AC catalyst were conducted in a lab-scale setup to quantitatively determine the pyrolytic products. Catalytic Pyrolysis Study

This Study seems to be on behalf of the KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) reaching towards goal of an energy circular economy. Natural Zeolite is a cheap local product there and they wanted to try it out. In the Catalytic process, the catalytic process enhances the target pyrolysis reactions and reduces reaction times and temperature, improves the liquid oil quality and increased the overall process efficiency (quote from a 2012 article).
